Hercus and Austin (2004) say that Yardliyawara and Malyangapa L8 are close. Their paper contains some Yardliyawara data and locates Yardliyawara as a member of the Yarli languages subgroup, with Malyangapa L8 and Wadikali L12 (2004:207).

Hercus and Austin indicate that the area identified as belonging to Ngurunta by Tindale (1974) is mainly inhospitable and the area was generally regarded as belonging to Yardliyawara (2004:210).
