Djabugay comprised five dialects: Yirrgay Y111, Guluy Y160, Nyagali Y162, Bulway Y110 and Djabugay; Djabugay is used as both a language name and a dialect name. Djabuygay shares similarities with the southern neighbouring language group Yidiny Y117, including vocabulary, pronoun roots, nominal and verbal suffixes and some enclitics; traditionally intermarriage between the two was permitted, resulting in bilingualism. The Kuku Yalanji Y78 to the north was not so socially involved with Djabugay and the cognates, morphological systems and realisations are different in many aspects (Patz, 1991:246-247).

The group speaking Djabugay dialects inhabited a triangle from just south of Cairns to just north of Atherton, then northward along the Barron River and on to Mount Molloy, then meeting the coast again between Port Douglas and Mossman (Patz 1991: 246-47).

Activities:

Kuranda State School ran a Djabugay program in 80's; this was running up to early 2000's. Smithfield State School also ran a Djabugay program for a while. Several school materials were produced early 90's.
