Yupungathi is a people name (Y19) whose language is Yuputhimri. The Yupungathi were called /yupungayth/ by the Linngithigh Y26, and Nggerikudi by Hey, presumably /gerikwiti/ (Crowley, 1981:149).
Thomson distinguishes between people Yupungatti (Y19) and language yuputimra (Y19), and identifies the Ngerrikudi in Hey as being the same people/language; he disputes Hey's description of country (1934:218-219).
Hey, Superintendent of the Presbyterian Mission in Mapoon, Batavia River North Queensland, compiled an elementary grammar of the Ngerrikudi language, published in 1903 'revised and edited' by Roth.
Previously the people name Yupangathi was used as the language name for this code (Y19), but there are separate names for language and for people.
