'Biggibilla Doongallah artworks are the traditional Songs & Maps of my Ancestral Matrilineal country in north-western New South Wales. The area of these Songlines which I paint, sculpture & sing encompasses over 84,000 sq. kms. This area involves my language group and five associated dialects. One of the most significant gathering sites for our people was Dharriwaa (Narran Lakes). These inter-tribal, ceremonial gatherings occurred twice a year during the summer & winter solstices.
These Songlines & Maps can only be passed down through esoteric, initiation rituals by the mother's brother which is the old, Matrilineal cultural and spiritual process. This is the process I went through with my uncle, my Matrilineal father, before he passed over. I had met many exceptional teachers in my life up to this point, however, in my humble opinion, my uncle was the most profound knowledge-holder in Esoteric Lore. Since his passing over, I still continue to travel and meet many wise people in the world and I still believe his knowledge and wisdom was unique and so very precious.
The word “Biggibilla” means an echidna (spiny ant-eater) and is the totemic (or initiated) surname of my lineage. Also associated to this name is my skin group - which now remains esoteric - my initiated protector and the flora and fauna responsibilities I hold as Guardian of the Goomah and Mingah - the Gateway to Bullimah......
The zoomorphic lines which feature in my paintings & sculptures come directly from my Uncle's sand engravings. These engravings are Songlines transported to the canvas and overlaid with sacred instruments and fauna and flora relevant to each song.' |
