According to the Kimberley Handbook, Nangu is the middle dialect of three Karajarri A64 dialects, the other two being Najanaja A106 on the coast and Nawurtu A107 from inland. McGregor (2004:9) says that owners of the Nangu, Nawurtu and Najanaja language varieties regard them as types of Karajarri and use both the general and more specific terms in reference to their language.

McKelson (1989) is principally concerned with the Nangu dialect of Karajarri.
