According to Patz (2002:3-5), Kuku Yalanji has been adopted as the cover term for a language that has about a dozen dialects: Gugu Bididji Y86, eastern Kuku Yalanji or Gugu Buyunji Y87, Gugu Jangkun Y109, (Kokokulungkur Y103), Gugu Nyungkul Y90, (Kuku Tyungay, Junkurara Y89), Wakura Y104, Kuku Jakanji Y161, western Kuku Yalanji or Kuku Yalaja Y163, Muluridji Y97, Wagaman Y233, Wulpura Y98.

Note that Anderson (1996) uses the term Kuku Yalanji in a different way; to refer to the nineteen or so clans that occupied the immediate Bloomfield River valley. See also Kuku Walandja Y81, Gugu Yanyu Y92, Gugu Dyilin Y159 and China Camp Y158, which is a variety of Muluridji Y97.

Speakers of the Kuku Yalanji language traditionally inhabited an area of over 2000 sq km extending from the Mossman River in the south to the Annan River in the north, bordered by the Pacific Ocean in the east and extending inland to presumably just west of Mt Mulgrave (Patz 2002:6).

Head of Palmer River, cast from Palmerville to Mount Lukin; south and west of the Dividing Range to upper Mitchell River; at Maytown; east to Byerstown (Tindale 1974).
