Yilngali is associated with the non-Pama Nyungan Western Mirndi languages of the Barkly Tableland, however its status is uncertain. Capell lists Jilngali (~Yilngali) (N2) and recommends comparison with Djamindjung N18 and Nungali N28 (1966). Shultze-Berndt says the name may be a term used by a neighbouring language group to refer to Jaminjung N18 (2000:7). Cleverly (1968:3) describes 'other dialects' of Jaminjung N18 as Ngaliwuru N19, Nungali N28 and Jilngali (N2), noting that Yilngali 'may be the name given to Djamindjung by a neighbouring tribe, the Gadjerong' K37.1. Shaw's collaborators indicate that speakers perceive Yilngali as distinct from Jaminjung N18 (1992 etc). Tindale describes Nungali N28 as an alternative name for Jilngali (1974:227).
